Rita Rudner originally arrived in New York city, age 15, to become a dancer. Ten years later, she took up comedy as she noticed there were a lot fewer female comedians compared to female dancers.

In 1984, as we have heard in previous installments, english comedy had been going through a big change. Old-style working-men’s club comedians were on their way out, and „alternative“ comedy was becoming popular with younger fans, such as students. Channel 4, the then-recently launched 4th TV channel in the UK (Satellite was a number of years away) capitalised upon this with „Friday-“ and „Saturday Night Live“ programmes, modelled on the similar American show.
