Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson first met in the late 1970′s, at Manchester University, where they were studying drama together. Under the name „20th Century Coyote“, they started performing anarchic comedy plays together. Hearing about the fledgling alternative comedy scene in London, they moved down and became part of the „Comic Strip“ club, which produced a group of performers who would become synonymous with alternative comedy in the UK.
Their first main exposure together (not counting Mayall’s solo appearances as „Kevin Turvey“, a rather naiive Brummie character) was in 1981 in „The Young Ones“, an anarchic BBC comedy about a group of students living together. Mayall played a left-wing sociology student named Rik, whilst Edmondson played a comically violent punk named Vyvian Basterd. The programme was extremely popular, although that didn’t stop them killing off the characters at the end of series two. Subsequent follow-up „Filthy, Rich and Catflap“ didn’t catch on in quite the same way, although the characters played by Mayall and Edmondson were basically similar to their characters in „The Young Ones“ and their earlier plays. : Mayall continued playing a grotesque, self-obsessed obnoxious self-deluding outcast, whilst Edmondson continued playing a violent career-alcoholic. These characters would continue throughout all their work together – as „The Dangerous Brothers“ on Channel 4′s „Friday Night Live“, through some notable „Comic Strip“ films, and finally, culminating in „Bottom“.
„Bottom“ was originally concieved after the pair had appeared as the two tramps „Vladimir“ and „Estragon“ in Samuel Beckett’s absurdist play „Waiting for Godot“ – a play where suddenly nothing happens all the time. „Bottom“ was to be a similar statement on the absurdity of life and how much of it is spent waiting for things to happen, which never do. Given the hyperactivity of the two stars, who also wrote the show, it became a kind of „Godot with fart gags“. Mayall plays Richard Richard, yet another of his grotesquely self-interested caricatures. Richie is a virgin, and constantly bemoans the fact. His flatmate, Eddie Hitler, is another of Edmondson’s violent, yet likeable, alcoholics. Part of the likeability of Eddie is largely due to the fact that he has to put up with Richie, which would cause most people to become violent and/or alcoholic. Both characters are long-term unemployed (and unemployable) and living from hand to mouth, hence the title. Ritchie relies on the charity of his aunt, who owns the flat they live in, and Eddie relies on the charity of Ritchie – he’s supposed to pay rent, but has never actually managed to get around to it. „Bottom“ could have become a somewhat tedious proposition, as a lot of it is effectively slapstick humour. However, the sheer vitality of the two performers pull the unlikely plots and the base humour through. Three series were made, and a fourth was in planning and had been written, but was cancelled by the BBC. Mayall was later heard to claim it had been a victim of „Political correctness“, which is ironic, considering their part in popularising the non-sexist, non-racist attitude of alternative comedy.
„Bottom“ wasn’t going to go easily, however, and the pair revamped the concept as a stage show, which lead to not one, but five separate „Bottom“ show tours, and ultimately, the film „Hotel Paradiso“, which sees the two take over the running of a hotel next to a nuclear power station.
After the film, largely directed by Edmondson, the pair decided to call it a day. Mayall had been injured in a bike accident, which had left him in a coma, from which he was recovering during the shooting of the film, and which strained his working relationship with Edmondson. The two no longer work together professionally – Edmondson now concentrates on his band, „The Bad Shepherds“, whilst Mayall has taken a number of straight acting roles. They remain firm friends, and have both expressed an interest in doing one more „Bottom“, but not in the forseeable future.

It’s August, and we’re on our way home from Edinburgh Fringe. On the radio, comedian Ed Byrne is being interviewed about the Fringe, and somehow he’s gotten onto a favorite subject of mine. He explains that his girlfriend’s snoring is quite stentorian – something we have in common. His girlfriend thinks it sounds like a kitten purring. No, says Ed, it sounds more like a cat drowning in porridge. I am hooked.

Ed Byrne comes from Dublin, and has played six sell-out Edinburgh Fringe shows (but not the one I went to, worse luck) as well as playing overseas in Canada, France(!), Australia, New Zealand and the United States, including five appearances on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”.

Man müsste meinen, dass Situationskomik über 3 Priester stumpfsinnig und formelhaft wäre, oder nicht?
Dann hast du sicherlich noch nie die höchst respektlose Show „Father Ted“ gesehen.
Father Ted Crilly ist ein habgieriger, jedoch liebenswerter Schurke von einem katholischen Priester, der für die Gemeinde von Craggy Island, an der Westküste von Irland zusammen mit seinen Kameraden – den Priestern Father Jack Hackett und Father Dougal McGuire – Gottesdienste abhält.

Think Fast, Father Ted:

Alle drei müssen dort Buße tun – Ted wurde erwischt wie er Kirchengelder unterschlagen hat („Das Geld ruhte doch nur auf meinem Konto“ wird während der gesamten Serie immer wiederholt), Father Jack ist ein alter Alkoholiker, so betrunken, dass er nur vier Wörter wiederholen kann: Drink! Fuck! Arsch! Mädels!

Die 3 Priester werden von ihrer Haushälterin Mrs. Doyle begleitet, eine Frau, die davon besessen ist, Tee und andere Gastfreundlichkeiten anzubieten.

Die Serie dreht sich rund um das alltägliche Leben der Charaktere, (dabei werden sie absichtlich nicht in der Kirche dargestellt) die die Geistlichen stattdessen als einen ausgedehnten Boy’s Club darstellt.
Die meisten Geschichten drehen sich um Ted, der sich auf Grund seines Drangs nach Ruhm und Reichtum ständig aus brenzligen Situationen retten muss. Sein größter Rivale ist Father Dick Byrne aus dem benachbarten Rugged Island, mit dem er sich kindische Machtspielchen liefert.

Die Rivalität zwischen den beiden Gruppen (Dick Byrne hat ähnliche Kumpanen: Der dumme junge Priester Cyril Mac Duff und ein gealterter Alkoholiker Jim Johnson), basiert in zahlreiche Episoden auf den erbitterten Wettkampf zwischen ihnen, und der Erinnerungswürdigste ist der irische Eurovision Song Contest, wo Ted und Dougal ein Lied von einem früheren finnischen Eurovision-Teilnehmer stahlen und daraus ihr Meisterwerk: „My Lovely Horse“ machten.

Andere Themen drehen sich um den furchteinflößenden Bischof Len Brennan, der angeblich für Teds Verbannung nach Craggy Island verantwortlich ist und der droht, ihn zu einer noch schlimmeren Kirchengemeinde zu schicken. Bischof Brennan schickt Ted oft zu moralischen Missionen, wie zum Beispiel gegen „The Passion of St. Tibulus“ zu protestieren – ein Film, den die katholische Kirche verbannt hat. Es stellt sich jedoch raus, dass Bischof Brennan nicht so eine blütenweiße Weste trägt wie er vorgibt – und Ted findet heraus, dass Bischof Brennan ein uneheliches Kind hat:

Aber es dauert nicht lange, bis Ted wieder in den „Schwarzen Büchern“ von Brennan landet, vor allem als Father Dick Byrne Ted dazu zwingt Bischof Brennan in den Arsch zu treten.

Traurigerweise ist Dermot Morgan, der Father Ted gespielt hat, wortwörtlich 24. Stunden nach dem letzten Dreh der letzten Father Ted Folge wegen eines plötzlichen Herzinfarkts gestorben.
Ein Denkmal in Form eines Stuhls wurde ihm gewidmet und kann am Merrion Square in Dublin, Irland gefunden werden.

You’d think that situation comedy about three priests would be dull and formulaic, wouldn’t you? Then you clearly have never seen the highly irreverent “Father Ted”. Father Ted Crilly is an avaricious, yet likeable rogue of a Catholic Priest who ministers to the parish of Craggy Island, on the west coast of Ireland, along with his companion priests Father Jack Hackett and Father Dougal McGuire.

All three of them are there as a penance – Ted was caught appropriating church funds (‘The money was just resting in my account’ is repeated throughout the entire series), Father Jack is an aged alcoholic so drunk he can only repeat four words – “Drink! Feck! Arse! Girls!”,

and Father Dougal is a naiive clueless idiot who can’t even be trusted to put his own socks on correctly, and was the root cause of the infamous “Blackrock incident”.

The three priests are attended to by their housekeeper, Mrs. Doyle, a woman obsessed with serving tea and other forms of hospitality.

The series revolves around the day-to-day life of the characters (although it deliberately keeps away from depicting them in Church), and depicts the clergy as a sort of extended boy’s club. Most plots revolve around Ted having to get himself out of trouble due to his scheming to become rich and famous. Ted’s great rival is Father Dick Byrne, from nearby Rugged Island, with whom he is locked into childish games of oneupmanship. The rivalry between the two groups (Dick Byrne has similar companions : stupid young priest Cyril MacDuff, and aged alcoholic Jim Johnson, and several episodes are based on the bitter competition between them, most memorably the Irish Eurovision Song contest, where Ted and Dougal steal a tune from a former Finnish Eurovision entry to write their magnum opus “My Lovely Horse”.

Other plots revolve around the fearsome Bishop Len Brennan, who was apparently responsible for exiling Ted to Craggy Island, and who threatens to send Ted to an even worse parish. Bishop Brennan often sends Ted on moral crusades, such as protesting against “The Passion of St. Tibulus” – a film the Catholic Church has condemned. It turns out that Bishop Brennan isn’t as lily-white as he pretends to be, and Ted finds out about Bishop Brennan’s love child:

But it isn’t long before Ted is back in Brennan’s black books, especially when Father Dick Byrne forces Ted to kick Bishop Brennan up the arse.

Sadly, Dermot Morgan, who played Father Ted, died suddenly of a heart attack, literally 24 hours after finishing the last Father Ted. A memorial chair, dedicated to him, can be found in Merrion Square in Dublin, Ireland.

Die Serie ist um den Gebrauch von Spezialeffekten von CGI (Computer Graphic Imaging) aufgebaut und wurde beschrieben als „Monthy Python trifft Dr. Who“. Sie nutzt die Spezialeffekte um sich über das Fantastische lustig zu machen, wie zum Beispiel die anhaftenden Probleme ein Superheld zu sein:

welche einige sehr imposante 3-D Grafiken hat, die es einem erlauben, in der Welt von „The Wrong Door“ umherzuwandern.
Leider sind die eingebetteten Clips auf Grund legaler Aspekte nur für Bewohner aus dem Vereinigten Königreich zu sehen – es reicht jedoch aus um dein Hirn zum explodieren zu bringen.

In Through The Out Door

Meet Philip. Philip is “in-between” jobs at the moment, having lost his job as a Lecturer at Nottingham Trent University due to “Anger Management” problems. His girlfriend’s mates think he’s way too old for her, and Melanie, his girlfriend is beginning to have second thoughts, because he’s a bit of a dinosaur.

Welcome to “The Wrong Door”, a new kind of sketch show, where Giant Robots devastate London whilst looking for their car-keys, TV’s top programme is “Superhero Tryouts” and your Boss is a Boss in the video-game sense :

The series is built around the use of CGI (Computer Graphic Imaging) special effects, and has been described as “Monty Python meets Dr. Who”, as it uses the possibilities of digital effects to make fun of the fantastic, such as the inherent problems of being a superhero:

As can be expected, the show has it’s own website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/wrongdoor/) which has some pretty impressive 3-D graphics, allowing you to wander round the world of “The Wrong Door”. Unfortunately, the embedded clips are only visible to internet users from the UK due to Rights issues but it’s still enough to make your brain explode.

Willkommen in Royston Valley – Du wirst niemals wieder gehen

Müde von vorhersehbarer Situationskomik mit den selben alten langweiligen Situationen?
Dann brauchst Du einen Trip nach Royston Valley, dem Heim von „The League of Gentlemen“. TLOG war ursprünglich ein Künstlerquartett – Mark Gatiss, Jeremy Dyson, Steve Pemberton und Reece Shearsmith. Anfänglich kam die Gruppe Mitte der 90er wegen ihren Auftritten beim Edinburgh Fringe Festival zu Ihrem Ruhm. Von dort aus kamen sie für die sechsteilige „On the town with the league of Gentlemen“ Serie zum BBC Radio 4 (welches oft als Inkubator für Britische Comedy dient). Die Serie wechselte dann 1999 zu BBC TV.

Papa Lazarou speaks to the dead :

Die League of Gentlemen ist Lichtjahre entfernt von standardisierter Situationskomik. Die Show spielt in der fiktiven Stadt Royston Vasey (eigentlich gefilmt in Hadfield, Derbyshire, eine typisch grimmige Nationalpark-Stadt, ungemütlich wie der Ort aus dem ich herkomme).
Royston Vasey hat die Albtraum-Atmosphäre eines Ortes, dem du nicht entkommen kannst – etwa so wie der Film „The Wicker Man“ oder das Dorf in der TV Serie „The Prisoner“ (Deutsch: „Nummer Sechs“).
Dies ist ein bewusster und überlegter Tribut an die 70er TV Show „Hammer House of Horror“, die eine ähnliche düstere Stimmung versprühte.

Good Morning Jobseekers :

Die Stadt ist bewohnt von einem grotesken Mix aus Charakteren wie Pauline Campbell-Jones, die autoritäre Ausbilderin im Arbeitsamt, die ihre glücklosen und arbeitslosen Auszubildenden in der Förderklasse mobbt und quält; die unheimliche Metzgerin Hilary Bliss, die „Special Stuff“ an ihre süchtigen Kunden liefert; das neurotische, Hygienebesessene und krötenliebende Paar Onkel Harvey und Tante Val; und Dr. Chinnery, ein unglücklicher Tierarzt dessen Patienten unveränderlich zu einem schrecklichen (jedoch lustigen) Ende kommen.
Über der Stadt, im Moorland, ist der „Local Shop“ vom unheimlichen Paar Edward und Tubbs Tattsyrup. In der zweiten Staffel wurden einige beachtenswerte Charaktere hinzugefügt, während die bereits existierenden ausgebaut wurden, wie Papa Lazarou ein unheimlicher Zigeuner-Clown und Besitzer eines Zirkus – der Höllen Karneval (ein Bezug auf Ray Bradbury’s „Something Wicked This Way Comes“) und Herr Lipp, ein schwuler deutscher Austauschlehrer, der ein noch größeres Geheimnis verbirgt. Viele der Charaktere finden ein morbides und grässliches Ende, oft erlitten durch Edward und Tubbs oder sie wurden, wie im Fall von Onkel Harvey und Tante Val, mit Ihren eigenen Waffen geschlagen. In der zweiten Staffel führten Unreinheiten im „Special Stuff“ von Hilary Briss zu einer Epidemie von unkontrollierbarem Nasenbluten, das viele der Stadtbewohner tötete.

The Dentons Aqua Vita:

Obwohl die Show ursprünglich als eine Reihe unverbundener Sketche geschrieben wurd, bringt das vereinheitlichende Motto der Stadt die diversen Charaktere die sie bewohnen zusammen und ein vereinheitlichter Plot hält alle drei Staffeln zusammen. Das heißt, dass die Charaktere oft die Möglichkeit haben sich kennenzulernen und aufeinander zu reagieren. Die Charaktere sind entweder aus den eigenen Erfahrungen der Gruppe entzogen oder aus Filmen inspiriert. Dr. Chinnery zum Beispiel basiert auf dem Charakter von Tristan Farnon aus „All Creatures Great And Small“ (Auf Deutsch: „Der Doktor und das Liebe Vieh“), während Ollie Plimsolls – Leiter der Theatergruppe „Legz Akimbo“- der die Stadt besuchte, auf den Leiter einer Theatergruppe basieren soll, mit dem Reece Shearsmith in Köln gearbeitet hat. (Keine zehn Pferde bringen mich dazu Namen zu nennen, obwohl zahlreiche große Kölsch im Höhninger nach der nächsten NightWash Show, könnten den ein oder anderen Versprecher verursachen, wenn Ihr wisst was ich meine…) und Herr Lipp soll an einen Krankenhaus-Vikar aus Deutschland angelehnt sein, dem Steve Pemberton begegnet ist.

Tubbs and Edward :

Die Serie hat enorme Popularität erlangt und zahlreiche Preise gewonnen, sowie einen Dokumentationsfilm und eine Bühnenshow hervorgebracht.
Unglaublicherweise wurde die Show im Deutschen Fernsehen gezeigt, sowohl übersetzt als auch im Original, jedoch nur sehr spät in der Nacht, aus Angst das ahnungslose deutsche Publikum wäre nicht wirklich bereit für solch schwarzen Humor. Aber wenn Hausmeister Krause jemals das Unglück haben sollte, Royston Vasey zu besuchen, würde sein Dackel einem grausamen Schicksal zu Händen Dr. Chinnerys ereilen und Krause würde schreiend von Tubbs und Edward verschleppt werden und niemals zurückkehren.

Es ist letztenendes eine LOKALE Show für LOKALE Menschen.

Welcome to Royston Vasey -You’ll Never Leave

Tired of predictable situation comedy featuring the same old boring situations? Then you need a trip to Royston Vasey, the home of „The League of Gentlemen“. TLOG was originally a quartet of performers – Mark Gatiss, Jeremy Dyson, Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith. Initially the group came to fame in the mid-90s due to their performances at the Edinburgh Fringe festival. From there they went to BBC Radio 4 (which often acts as an incubator for British comedy) for the six-part „On The Town with the League of Gentlemen“ series. The series then transferred to BBC TV in 1999.

The League of Gentlemen is light years away from standard situation comedies. The show is set in the fictional town of Royston Vasey (actually filmed on location in Hadfield, Derbyshire, a typically grim Peak District town uncomfortably close to where I come from). Royston Vasey has the nightmare atmosphere of a place you cannot escape – something like the film „The Wicker Man“ or The Village in the TV series „The Prisoner“. (German : „Nummer Sechs“) This is a conscious and deliberate tribute by the team, who deliberately went for a similar feeling to the 1970′s „Hammer House of Horror“ anthology TV show.

The town is populated by a grotesque set of characters such as Pauline Campbell-Jones, the authoritarian Trainer at the Job Centre who bullies and tortures the luckless unemployed in her Jobsearch classes, sinister Butcher Hilary Briss, who serves „Special Stuff“ to his addicted customers, neurotic hygiene-obsessed toad-loving couple Uncle Harvey and Auntie Val, and Dr. Chinnery, a hapless vet whose patients invariably come to a terrible (yet hilarious) end. Above the town, on the Moors, is the „Local shop“ kept by sinister couple Edward and Tubbs Tattsyrup. The second series added a number of notable characters, whilst expanding the existing ones, such as Papa Lazarou, sinister gypsy-clown owner of a circus – the Pandemonium Carnival (a reference to Ray Bradbury’s „Something Wicked This Way Comes“) and Herr Lipp, a gay German exchange teacher who hides an even greater secret.
Many of the characters meet morbid or hideous ends, often at the hands of Edward and Tubbs, or Hilary Briss, or hoist by their own petard (or pet toad) as in the case of Uncle Harvey and Auntie Val. In the second series, impurities in the „special stuff“ dealt out by Hilary Briss lead to an epidemic of uncontrollable nosebleeds killing off many of the townsfolk.

Although the show was originally written as a set of unconnected sketches, the unifying theme of the town brings together the diverse characters who inhabit it, and a unifying plot holds together all three series. This means that the characters often get to meet and react to one-another. The characters are drawn either from personal experiences of the group, or inspired by films. Dr. Chinnery is based on the character of Tristan Farnon from „All Creatures Great And Small“ (German: „Der Doktor und die Liebe Vieh“), for example, whilst Ollie Plimsolls, the leader of theatre group „Legz Akimbo“ who visit the town, is said to be based on the leader of a theatre group whom Reece Shearsmith worked with in Cologne. (Wild Horses will not drag names out of me, although several large Kölsches at Höninger after the next Nightwash might just cause a slip of the tongue, if you know what I mean…) and Herr Lipp is said to be based on a hospital chaplain encountered in Germany by Steve Pemberton.

The series has gained enormous popularity, and won several awards as well as spawning a feature film and stage show. Amazingly, the show has been shown on German TV, in both translated and untranslated form, but then only very late at night, for fear that the unsuspecting German public isn’t quite ready for such dark comedy. But then, if Hausmeister Krauss ever had the misfortune to visit Royston Vasey, his Dackel would meet a gruesome fate at the hands of Dr. Chinnery and Kraus would be dragged away screaming by Tubs and Edward, never to be seen again…

It is, after all, a LOCAL show for LOCAL people. There’s nothing for YOU here…..

Stephen Lynch isn’t so much a comedian, more a singer who writes and sings funny songs. His sense of humour is not for the easily-offended, however, as many of his songs have a very black-comedy style. He is the kind of comedian one either loves or hates.

He started writing funny songs after being inspired by the film „Spinal Tap“ – a fake documentary about a tired 80′s Rock Band.

In 1996, after moving to New York to become an actor, a friend suggested that he should try playing some of these songs to an audience, and he quickly found a following. For the next few years, he toured Universities, Night-Clubs and theater type venues, deliberately avoiding the comedy club circuit, as he prefers music-club audiences.

Although primarily a US performer, he is quick to admit that the downloading and viral aspects of the Youtube era, have catapulted his popularity world-wide and created a cult following throughout the world and especially in Europe – enough for him to have performed in Cologne at the Gloria twice, and in Berlin as well. At the Gloria show, one fan actually took leave from his tour in Irak to be able to see his „3 Balloons“ tour live.

Lynch’s songs are a classic example of how to write a comic song : as a song lasts 2-3 minutes, it has to build on its basic joke, otherwise the joke gets stale, or the song has to be extremely short. Often he uses the first verse to lead the unsuspecting audience into what seems to be a conventional song, setting them up for a twist, such as in „Prettier than You“
